How and why to use a KPI / Dimension Map

A lot of people talk about KPI Trees.

Not so many people talk about KPI / Dimension Maps.

Personally, I use KPI / Dimension Maps more often.

Here is how I use both tools:

KPI / Dimension Map

  • This is a cross-tab that shows KPIs on the vertical axis and Dimensions on the horizontal axis
  • Example: Conversion Rate, Sessions and Purchases by Time, Marketing Channel and Customer Segment
  • Visualizes how KPIs and Dimensions can be combined (e.g. New Customer Purchases is a composite KPI based on the KPI Purchases and the Dimension Customer Segment)
  • Relatively easier and quicker to set up compared to KPI Trees
  • But doesn’t show how KPIs influence each other
  • Best for defining the feature set of a new data infrastructure or data project

KPI Tree

  • This is a graph (or tree) that breaks down KPIs into its parts and shows which KPIs influence each other
  • Example: Conversion Rate can be broken down in Purchases / Sessions
  • Doesn’t visualize how KPIs and Dimensions can be combined
  • Relatively harder to set up compared to KPI / Dimension Maps
  • Best for understanding which actions drive business performance

I really love both tools.
